In a galaxy far away, Luton Care Home celebrates this year’s Star Wars Day in intergalactic style

On May the Fourth at Little Bramingham Farm, the residents have been ‘Feeling the Force’ celebrating this year’s Star Wars Day, watching the original 1977 film, A New Hope. “The residents enjoy all genres of films, so to make 4th May a really ‘Yoda-Best’ day, we arranged a private viewing of the iconic film in the home complete with themed decorations, Star Wars props and traditional cinema treats,” said Emma Lawrence, the Registered Manager at Little Bramingham Farm.

“It was a wonderful way for the residents to enjoy the film and reminisce over their shared love and enjoyment of the film, its characters and storylines,” added Karen Charity, the care home’s Activities Coordinator.

Star Wars Day is celebrated each year on May 4th and is now global calendar date for fans to commemorate the legendary stories created by George Lucas. “The residents had a great time, waving their Jedi Lightsabers and chatting about how many times they’d seen the films, their favourite Star Wars film chapter and their favourite characters. It was a close fought battle, but R2-D2 won the vote,” continued Karen.

“The ‘Force’ is definitely strong with the residents as they know so much about all the Star Wars films,” added Emma. “One resident told me that in The Empire Strikes Back, Harrison Ford actually ad-libbed the famous ‘I know’ line after Princess Leia says, ‘I love you’. He was, allegedly, supposed to say, ‘I love you too’, but he swapped it out and created his iconic words.

“Another resident, who is also a keen Star Wars fan, told Karen and I that George Lucas originally saw Hans Solo as a green-skinned alien with gills and that Chewbacca was modelled after his dog, an Alaskan Malamute called Indiana. I wonder if that’s where Mr Ford’s next unforgettable namesake originated from?”

“All the residents agreed that the May the Fourth celebrations were out of this world are now keen to see all the other Star Wars films over the coming weeks at our Movie Afternoons,” continued Karen. “So, the next feature will be ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ where Darth Vader tells Luke Skywalker he is his Father, but most of all the residents are looking forward to seeing Yoda, Luke’s Jedi Master and Mentor.”

“It certainly does prove that ‘The Force is Strong’ at Little Bramingham Farm,” concluded Emma.
