Spring has sprung and is in full bloom at Bernard Sunley Care Home

The Residents and care team at Bernard Sunley, our Woking-based residential, nursing and dementia care home are blossoming with excitement as they finalise the plans for the care home’s free Community Springtime Garden Party and, the first BBQ of the year.

“We consistently keep our promise to the residents that we are dedicated to keeping them involved with, and part of, the local community,” said Andy Cumper, the Registered Manager at Bernard Sunley. “As they all really enjoy our wide range of community events which take place throughout the year, we thought it would be a lovely idea to host a Springtime Garden Party and have our first BBQ of the season.”

“The traditional British Springtime Garden Party is a time-honoured custom which is supposed to mark the return of the warmer weather,” added Monika Ahmed, one of the Activity Coordinators at the care home. “The residents adore not only all our many community parties, but also the tasty BBQs we hold throughout the summer months. So, our Springtime Garden Party and BBQ is a great way to start a spring and summer full of happiness, laughter, conversations, community engagement and, of course, enjoying delicious BBQ dishes.”

“On Thursday 16th April from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m., we are planning a lovely, quintessential Community Springtime Garden Party which will be in keeping with famous garden parties of the past,” added Andy.

“The most famous British Springtime Garden Parties are the prestigious Royal Garden Parties which were established by Queen Victoria back in the 1860s. Even though they were held in the afternoon, the events were originally known as ‘The Breakfasts’. It wasn’t until 22nd June 1868 that the Queen moved the events to the Palace’s lawn, and they became the famous Garden Parties.

“With this in mind, our community garden party – which will be held in our pretty and welcoming gardens – will have a relaxed atmosphere with a nostalgic ambience. The residents have wide and eclectic tastes in music so to make sure we cover all their favourite performers, there will be fantastic background songs and tunes playing from artists including Dame Vera Lynn, Sir Cliff Richard, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, George Michael, Ed Sheeran, The Spice Girls and many more.”

“Everyone at Bernard Sunley is looking forward to our Springtime Community Garden Party and BBQ, and our Chef is already receiving requests for his delicious BBQ specialities,” continued Monika.

“We’d love to see as many people as possible on Thursday 16th April, as it is shaping up to be a wonderful event to welcome back the warmer weather, sunny days and lighter evenings. To book your spaces at our first 2026 garden party, please call 01483 764300 and a member of the care team will be there to help and add you on the event guest list.”

“We are all looking forward to welcoming as many of our local community, residents’ families, friends, loved ones and clients from Woking Day Care to the first Bernard Sunley garden party of the year. As the saying goes, ‘Spring is Nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s Party!’ and that’s just what we have planned for 16th April,” concluded Andy.
