At Redcot, our Haslemere-based residential care home, the residents are warming up and going for gold as they prepare to welcome their very own Winter Olympic Games. “Knowing how much the residents enjoy all our meaningful activities and fun competitions, we thought it would be a great idea to host our very own Winter Olympic Games for them to enjoy and participate in,” said Latasha Jarrett, the Registered Manager at the care home.
Taking place from 23rd February to 2nd March, The Redcot Winter Olympic Games will be opened in true Olympic style with an inclusive Opening Ceremony.
“At lunchtime on 23rd February, we will host our Opening Ceremony,” continued Jenny Ryder, one of Redcot’s Activities Coordinators. “We will pass The Redcot Torch around to everyone, whilst listening to The National Anthem, until it comes to its podium where it will remain for the week.”
To set the Olympic scene, Redcot will be the ‘Piste de Résistance’, decorated with Olympic Rings and the flags of the competing countries. “To decide upon the teams, the residents and care team will draw names from a hat,” continued Latasha. “Once chosen, each team will pick a Captain, a team name and either choose a team anthem or make one up themselves. “The teams will then compete for points across a variety of fun and engaging Winter Olympic-themed games and activities where both individuals and teams can win points throughout the week; with everyone encouraged to join in at their own pace.”
“Games we have planned are all ‘Olympic-esque’ and include, for example, Curling – but not as you know it,” added Jenny. “It will be how many Curlers can a team put into a staff member’s hair in two minutes. We’ll also have a wide range of other games which will be adapted for all abilities. “When we told the residents about the Redcot Winter Olympic Games, they all agreed it would be ‘snow-much’ fun and a fantastic ‘snow-cial’ activity.”
On Monday 2nd March, The Redcot Winter Olympic Games week will come to an end and be celebrated with a traditional Closing Ceremony. “In advance of The Closing Ceremony we will count the final scores and, at the event, announce the winners in Gold, Silver and Bronze positions. We’ll then have our very own presentation of trophies, medals and prizes to celebrate everyone’s participation and the Redcot Team Spirit,” concluded Latasha.
