Friends of the Elderly Malvern and Kidderminster Day Care Services Supporting the Local Community at Christmastime

Christmas Tree MandieDay care clients at Friends of the Elderly’s Malvern and Kidderminster Day Care Services, which support people who are living with dementia and a range of age-related conditions – and residents from Malvern-based Davenham, Perrins House and Bradbury Court, the residential, nursing and dementia care homes which are collectively known as Friends of the Elderly Malvern, have been getting ‘Christmassy Creative’ crafting individual and unique Christmas decorations to adorn the charity’s very own festive tree which is part of the Annual Christmas Tree Festival at Worcestershire Cathedral. “The day care clients and residents really got into the Christmas Spirit, designing and hand making a great selection of original tree decorations,” said Shirley Bradley, Friends of the Elderly’s Head of Day Care Services. “We have displayed a Friends of the Elderly Christmas Tree in past festivals at the Cathedral and making the decorations is now a firm favourite on the December activities calendar for everyone.”

“Having our own Friends of the Elderly Christmas Tree on display in the annual festival and making all the bespoke decorations, is a lovely, festive activity for our clients and residents to get involved with,” added Linda Gilks, the Deputy Manager at Malvern Day Care. “It’s also a perfect opportunity for us to support and be part of our local community and really got everyone into the Yuletide Spirit.”

“At Friends of the Elderly Malvern, the three Activities Coordinators, Dawn Jones, Selena Whittaker and Tina Ellenton, arranged for a special Christmas arts and crafts session in Davenham Chapel, where the residents had a wonderful time creating their very own decorations for the Christmas Tree,” said Jo Bennett, the General Manager of the three care homes. “Making the decorations has also been a great reminiscing activity, stirring up many happy memories of Christmases past,” added Jeanette Samuels, the Deputy Manager at Kidderminster Day Care service. “It was also a great joint working opportunity for not only the residents and day care clients, but for the care teams at Friends of the Elderly Malvern and Kidderminster and Malvern Day Care.”

Christmas tree“As part of our continued commitment to keep all our day care clients and residents involved with – and part of – the local community, we work closely with our community friends and organisations to make sure the residents and clients are supported, stay connected to their surroundings and are able to enjoy everyday life,” said Shirley.
“Being part of Worcester Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival, is now an annual and favourite addition to our existing, busy calendar of community activities and events.  Everyone can now vote for their favourite tree in Worcester Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival,” added Jo. “Just visit the Cathedral’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/WorcesterCathedral and the tree with the most ‘Likes’ -combined with the in-person token votes – will win the coveted ‘People’s Choice’ and a free spot at next year’s festival. You can’t miss our fantastic, festive tree – it’s at the bottom of the ramp as you enter the Cloisters so please vote for us, it would be so special to win.”

“We’d love as many people as possible to visit the Festival and see The Friends of the Elderly’s Christmas Tree. We hope everyone will love it as much as we do as the hand-made decorations and sparkling lights will fit perfectly alongside all the other beautiful, glittering Christmas Trees,” concluded Shirley. The annual Worcester Cathedral Christmas Tree Festival 2025 runs from 4th December 2025 to 6th January 2026, and will feature over 300 trees, making it the largest Festival of its kind in the UK. The Festival will be open during normal visiting hours – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays and from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
